Kratom's Magic Elixir

Kratom Seed Strains Mitragynine
Mitragynia Speciosa

What exactly is it that's making Kratom so popular?

Let's take a deep dive into Kratom, to learn exactly how and why it works.

As you'll soon learn, Mitragynia Speciosa (AKA Kratom), belongs the same family of flowering plants, Rubiaceae, as Coffee. Both of which have psychoactive properties—but why is so little known about Kratom and how does it become so much more power?

We'll address these question along with a handful of others that will help you understand both the Magic and the Myths behind Mintragyna Speciosa—let's start with Strains

Kratom and the human connection to it’s ailments (feel good, sleep, energy, etc.), can pretty much be sorted out into two marketable power arenas—Strains & Alkaloids. Read on below for an in-depth study on how each character has played its role and which truly dominates the magic behind Kratom.

Kratom Strains | how, why, what

A  B E G I N N E R ’ S  G U I D E  TO  K R ATO M  S T R A I N S

Don’t let the over saturated Kratom colors found on many websites fool you. Sadly, the host of new and exotic strains that are mysteriously showing up on-line is just another unfortunate example of marketing at its worst.

A bit of research will reveal that there are only three true variations of what we call Kratom ‘strains’. White, Green and Red Vein Kratom strains are often synonymous with different life-stages of a tree. However, often misrepresented, red vein leaves can occur and remain on young trees—all newgrowth and shoots always produce red vein leaves, which later, as the plant develops, turn white,or green—or in some cases remain red.

Another fact that is often confused is the misclassification of trees with a singular, specific vein color. In fact, all three color strains can appear throughout the life cycle of a Kratom tree.

Over time, strains have become arbitrarily known for their desired effects, ranging from the more energizing white vein, to the social elixir of green, and finally, the relaxing qualities touted to arise from the reddish veins. However, it is fair to mention that in all of our years experience and deep research, we’ve found very little difference in a vein’s alkaloid profile. The types of alkaloids and their relationship to the main alkaloid, Mitragynine, are all very similar. However, the amount of Mitragynine can vary conclusively by how Kratom leaves have been grown, harvested, processed and ultimately—how they are packaged and stored.

Strains, Veins and Blends

What do different strains colors really mean?

Let's start by acknowledging the elephant in the room—there are only three true strain colors; red, green and white. More and more often, overseas suppliers and even vendors are fabricating fancy new names as a marketing ploy to sell their Kratom.

Over the past decade, due to the growing popularity of Kratom, the harvesting of leaves has become a fairly lucrative opportunity for Indonesia. Unfortunately, quality control is often overlooked. Furthermore, unethical practices have become a common place among opportunistic suppliers abroad. False claims that exotic ‘new’ strain are being cultivated for their unique properties is a common marketing tactic used to attract new overseas clientele.

This prompts confusion with uneducated new vendors who then mistakenly market these ‘new’ strains to their customers. In fact, these tactics work so well with naive consumers that a growing number of unethical on-line vendors have adopted their own false marketing claims to fuel sales. For example, “Green Elephant” Kratom was fabricated to represent a ‘new’ strain that comes from trees with larger leaves. In truth, many of these vendors are filling orders for fictitious new strains from a single batch of Kratom powder. In fact, there is little to no research that proves there are any significant differences due to the color of the veins.

We’ve learned over two decades of experience that most Indonesian suppliers don’t sort Kratom leaves harvested by the color of the veins. Rather, they employ various drying techniques to affect the color of the Kratom powder. Green Kratom powder left in the sun for several hours will darken in color (try it at home and see for yourself).

As for the difference in colors, understand this simple rule of nature: new growth on both young and mature Kratom trees always starts off with red vein leaves. In some cases, they can remain red or change in color to what’s referred to as ‘White Vein’ or ‘Green Vein'. All three colors can and typically will occur on trees that progress through a full life-cycle.

There are arguments for the psychoactive properties associated with the age of a tree (and congruently, the color of the tree's veins), white is said to be more energizing, while red is more relaxing/sedative and better for managing pain. Green, therefore is a strain that falls somewhere in the middle. In truth, the psychoactive properties of Kratom has much more to do with the nutrients in the soil, the climate and hydration and how the leaves are processed and ultimately—how the final product is stored.

1-2 Gram

Mild Dose

Clear sensation of mood boosting
and stimulating effects

2-4 Grams

Advanced Dose

Dosages at this level often begin balancing
out mood and energy stimulus and increase in
sedation and pain management

3-6 Gram

Strong Dose

These are considered high-dose levels,
which commonly rise above energy and euphoric effects and become more sedative and analgesic

5-8 Grams

Very Strong Dose

NOT RECOMMENDED: At this stage, consumers who have not built very high tolerance levels will find substantially
sedative effects and potentially induced hallucination

Common Strain Characteristics

Often mistaken by vendors online is the difference between strains and blends. Only 3 strains exist, however, any number of blends can be created by mixing these strains together—which often creates the confusion behind actual kratom STRAINS. For example, you could mix a percentage of red and green and name it Charlie's Chocolate Champion ”Blend” (not strain). It is important to be clear to consumers the difference between the two terms.

Energizing effects

White Vein—

White Vein Energizing
  • White vein Kratom is typically known as the highest in mitragynine alkaloids
  • Said to provide a stronger energizing and mood enhancing properties
  • It's often the strain that is used as a stimulant in place of caffeine to promote alertness and wakefulness.

White Vein Kratom:
It is often used as a stimulant in the place of caffeine to promote alertness, mental vigilance and wakefulness. People who take White Vein Kratom often state that they experience increased concentration as well as motivation and endurance when working for long hours.

Green Vein—

Green Vein Calmness
  • Balance between White (younger
trees higher MIT) and Red (higher in 7 hydroxymitragynine)
  • Mild energy booster, can perk you up without putting you on edge
  • Popular choice for social anxiety and reaching a ‘centered' state of alertness

Green Vein Kratom:
Naturally occurs in the trees aging process between its White and Red periods. A subtle mix between the effects of Red and White Kratom. It’s noted as useful in treating pain, lethargy or drowsiness that other analgesics may cause.

Pain Management

Red Vein—

Red Vein Relaxation
  • The choice most often pursued for pan releaf and management
  • Recognized for soothing muscles
  • Red Vein Kratom is very soothing and can be used to treat tension and is commonly used as an alternative to pharmaceutical pain killers

Red Vein Kratom:
Described as having a more calming influence than other strains - ‘one that can help you unwind and release tension’. Said to effective quieting your mind while giving you a sense of well-being. Red Kratom is also well suited for use as a sleep aid for people who suffer from insomnia

Strains are important, but if you really want to know what makes Kratom magic, take a few minutes to learn about Mitragynine — the alkaloid the makes kratom tick.

Kratom The Holy Grail

Mitragyine | how, why, what

The most important piece of knowledge you can grasp is HOW & WHY Mitragynine works and WHAT makes it affect our happy bone

Here's an interesting article printed on Westword (online) with insight into Kratom's potential after nearly 2 decades of study by the foremost internationally recognized expert on kratom - Christopher McCurdy, Ph.D., a professor of medical chemistry for the University of Florida College of Pharmacy.

So is kratom a miracle drug that could follow the trail toward greater acceptance blazed by medical marijuana? Or will it trigger a countrywide crackdown that could drive the product underground?

The man most likely to provide the answers to these questions is Christopher McCurdy, a professor of medical chemistry for the University of Florida College of Pharmacy. If there's one person in the United States who'll determine whether kratom remains in the legal shadows in this country or becomes a fully regulated substance whose sales are authorized from coast to coast, it's him.

Why? Since December 2018, McCurdy's UF institution has received two grants from the National Institute on Drug Abuse totaling $6.9 million to study the various effects of kratom and its alkaloids, and McCurdy is the lead investigator in these analyses. If his findings suggest medical efficacy, additional research of the sort that could result in an eventual blessing from the feds is all but assured. But should he and his colleagues determine that the risks outweigh the benefits, the movement to mainstream kratom may well be doomed.

At this point, McCurdy, who rarely gives interviews, isn't tipping his hand in terms of which way he's leaning. "Right now, our approach is, 'Let's get the science. Let's see what it tells us,'" he says. "If science tells us it's bad news, we'll definitely report that. But if the science tells us there's great potential, or some potential, to help those suffering from addiction, we definitely want to tap that and find out as much as we can."

Kratom advocates believe this verdict is already in. Mac Haddow, senior fellow on public policy with the American Kratom Association, who is currently pitching legislation dubbed the Kratom Consumer Protection Act in Colorado and other states, told us, "The science resonates. The science is so powerful in terms of kratom's potential beneficial effects, and that it's safe."

Still, Faith Day, the founder and co-owner of Lakewood's Clean Kratom Wellness Center, sees the need for the kind of oversight that could flow from McCurdy's research. In her words, "There's just a lot of sketchy players out there. We need the government to be able to work with the kratom community so we can provide safe access to this product. It's been put in such a bad light because of all of these issues: contamination issues, heavy metals."

For his part, McCurdy didn't set out to become the key to kratom. "I've been involved for a long time in health care and research," he says. "I started life as a pharmacist and decided to go to graduate school after I had some research experience in pharmacy school.

McCurdy entered graduate school and worked on treatments for Alzheimer's disease and nicotine dependence through a natural product called lobeline, he says. "That got me interested in going on and doing a post-doctoral fellowship with a guy named Phil Portoghese at the University of Minnesota. He was one of the fathers of opioid chemistry and really helped to define the opioid systems as we know them today. I learned from him that you can essentially spend an entire year on a molecule or a plant."

The knowledge of molecular biology and pharmacology and the opioid system made him think that if he could try to come up with drugs to treat dependence, he could carve out a career.

Over the course of his work, McCurdy continues, "I came across a compound called salvia before much was published about it. I found it to be a kappa-opioid receptor antagonist and a potent hallucinogen. Years later, there was a big YouTube craze because of a video showing Miley Cyrus smoking the stuff. I was funded by the National Institute on Drug Abuse to study that, and I was invited by officials at NIDA to give a presentation on naturally occurring opioid compounds. I started digging into the literature and looking to see what might have been published — and that's when I came across kratom. It was probably 2004," when he was a staffer at the University of Mississippi School of Pharmacy.

He soon realized "there was something very interesting about this plant and the alkaloids within it. It was relatively unexplored from a scientific perspective, so we didn't know if there was any legitimacy about the claims made over the years about it either warding off withdrawals after people ran out of opiates in Thailand and Mali, where it had been traditionally used, or if it was helpful for people trying to wean themselves off illicit opioid use. I was interested in that early on."

Indeed, McCurdy reveals that he tried to launch human clinical trials related to kratom way back in 2008, but "everything came to a grinding halt when they found we couldn't say where our raw material was going to come from. That's one of the greatest problems in advancing the research, and it's going to be there until we can get authenticated and unadulterated kratom that hasn't been exposed to pesticides or chemicals. These are tricky things, and having a chain of custody for that material will be problematic, because everything has to be imported into the U.S."

Science Behind Mitragynine

Read on below and learn what you should know, what you need to know, and what you might like to know about the plant that’s taking the world by storm. The mysterious Mitragynine—one of nature’s newest and most promising discoveries, a powerful alkaloid that could potentially define the future of medicinal treatments.

Mitragynine is the key alkaloid in Kratom responsible for its effects. However, there are 37 alkaloids that are unique to M. Speciosa— 5 of which are most active including

Mitragynine MG - 66%
Paynantheine P - 9%
Speciogynine SG - 7%
7-hydroxymtragynine HMG - 2%
Speciociliatine SC - 1%
Others - 15%

Only 3 Strain Colors

All vein colors appear on the same tree over its life-time. White (young trees), Green (mature), Red (potentially all ranges in the growth process). The confusion comes when vendors mix these veins to create their own ‘blends’. Marketing strategy.

Mitragynine Dosages

The amount of Mitragynine consumed is directly related to the effect experienced: A low amount Mitragynie results in an energizing state. A high amount of Mitragynine producesa sedative effect.

Are Strain Colors Different

Contrary to common belief, most Kratom is the same. There are subtle difference in effect between all types of Kratom which are commonly the result of growing conditions, processing, and even storage.

Kratom Leaves

The coffee bean's
not so secret little cousin

With nearly 15 million Kratom patrons in the US, and growing, you might be wondering how long before there's a Kratom shop on every corner?

That might seem like a crazy question, right? We've certainly seen crazier things happen. Believe it or not, the coffee plant and the Kratom plant (Mintragyna Speciosa) come from the same family of flowering plants, Rubiaceae.

Rubiaceae—the Einstein of plants?

One could argue indefinitely as to whether plants have any sort of intelligence—or not. If knowing where to grow could be used as an indicator, the Rubiaceae might be a genius. With over 13,000 species belonging within Rubiaceae's geisperm family and a propensity toward warmer climates (they thrive near the equator) Rubiaceae is one smart bean.

The Coffee Bean's Not So Secret Little Cousin

A hankering to attract humans

Not only does this flowering species fancy the warmth of tropical climates, the Rubiaceae also seems to know something about satisfying certain needs.

Psychoactive profiles

It's not hard to understand the connection between humans and a plant, like coffee, that provides energy. Much like the psychoactive alkaloids in coffee, (caffeine) Kratom has a unique alkaloid called Mitragynine, which seems to be attracting quite a bit of attention lately. Yet, arguably more magical, Mitragynine is touted for activating pain management, happiness, relaxation, sleepiness and even energy (depending on the the strain). To some, the Kratom experience is nothing short of a miracle. Maybe it deserves to be on every corner!

Mitragynine Content

Full Spectrum

Our 45% Full Spectrum Kratom Extract contains all the alkaloids and the lipids found in natural Kratom and in similar proportions as found in nature, but without the heavy bitterness of natural Kratom powder. Full-bodied in effect but not in taste. Good quality leaf powder contains approximately 1.25% Mitragynine. This extract contains 45% Mitragynine which makes it 36 times more potent than leaf powder. Being a “Full Spectrum extract” means that it also still contains all of the other alkaloids and lipids that are found in the Kratom leaf. This is our benchmark extract. It is the complete full spectrum alkaloid fraction of the plant with all of the other major alkaloids occurring in similar levels and proportions as they are found in the plant.

For a typical dose of 2 teaspoons or 4.5gm of leaf powder you would only need 110mg of this extract to achieve exactly the same effects.

Mitragynine Content

Mitragynine COntent

Currently under the microscope of scientists worldwide, Mitragynine is classified as a partial-agonist opioid. What this means is that Mitragynine fits the same mu pain receptors as traditional full- agonistopioids but does not have the same characteristics of traditional opioids. Current research is indicating that pure Mitragynine does not contain the same addictive qualities and does not cause respiratory failure with overdose - a common concern with traditional ‘full’ opioidagonists’.
